Fedora Linux 9 Released
24May08
I always like it when a new version of Fedora comes out. A chance to clean up my system and check out some new software. Here’s the official release notes and a review from linux.com.

Well, as much as I enjoy a fresh and clean install of linux, sometimes it seems more of an initiation process.
I download the DVD via bittorrent. Speed was great as there’s a ton of seeds. I back up all of my data on a 500GB USB hard drive (I also keep a hard copy of everything on DVD-R, yes I have a shit load of them). Unplug the drive and reboot with Fedora 9 ‘Sulphur’. F9 doesn’t like my graphics card. My 22 inch LG monitor complained, “Analog out of range. 81.3kHz / 65Hz.” Which reminds me I need to buy a DVI cable. Anyhow… It’s a middle of the road NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 500MB. It functioned with purely free software on F8 and great with the proprietary drivers. Unfortunately, after several hours of tinkering, begging and praying I was unable to get X running. I had to yank the card. Poking around the atrpms-users mail list archives I find that others are also having problems and it looks like something nvidia will have to patch to be compatible with the latest version of xorg. Ugh. Ah well, no bzflag for a month or two.
There was also a problem with the network where the original dns settings didn’t take and after logging in I had to reset them, but that only took a second.
Otherwise I’m having an entertaining evening of grabbing a couple of evil media codecs and setting up a test mysql database.
Side note: a useful Firefox plugin is Password Exporter 1.1 at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2848. Saves you the time of copying the password text file. Neat.
here’s an interesting article at lwn.net talking about the xorg and nvidia issue. while i’m unhappy about my graphics card not working i have chosen a 100% free distribution of linux and i really don’t want the devs chasing some non-free bits arounds. for those interested see: http://lwn.net/Articles/283291/
there’s a fix out for the nvidia driver issue. thanks to matt at blu.org for the update!
